IUI
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
A gentle, minimally invasive first step toward parenthood.
What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a straightforward assisted reproductive procedure in which a concentrated, washed sample of sperm is placed directly into the uterine cavity around the time of ovulation. By bypassing the cervix and shortening the distance sperm must travel to reach the egg, IUI significantly improves the chances of fertilisation. It is often the first treatment recommended for couples with mild subfertility.
Who is this for?
- Unexplained infertility
- Mild male factor infertility (borderline sperm parameters)
- Cervical mucus hostility
- Ovulatory dysfunction (with ovulation induction)
- Couples requiring donor sperm
- Sexual dysfunction preventing natural intercourse
Key Benefits
Step-by-Step Procedure
A clear, transparent walkthrough of every stage of your IUI treatment at Ova IVF.
Baseline Assessment
Hormonal blood tests, transvaginal ultrasound, and semen analysis are performed to confirm IUI suitability and plan the cycle.
Ovarian Monitoring
The cycle may be natural or stimulated using oral or injectable medications to develop 1–2 follicles. Serial ultrasound scans track follicle growth.
Trigger Injection
When the dominant follicle reaches 18–20mm, a trigger injection is given to induce ovulation. IUI is scheduled 36–40 hours later.
Semen Sample Collection & Preparation
A fresh semen sample is collected and processed in the laboratory using a swim-up or density gradient technique to isolate the most motile, healthy sperm.
Insemination Procedure
A thin, flexible catheter is gently passed through the cervix into the uterine cavity. The prepared sperm sample is slowly injected. The procedure takes 5–10 minutes and is generally painless.
Post-Procedure Rest & Luteal Support
You rest for 15–20 minutes after the procedure. Progesterone supplementation may be prescribed to support the luteal phase.
Pregnancy Test
A blood beta-hCG test is performed 14 days after IUI to confirm pregnancy.
